University of California San Diego

Location: La Jolla, CA

Type: Arts & Entertainment
Educational

Awards: 2001 AIA-SFV Citation Award

We were a Joint Venture Architect and Theatre Consultant for this 44,000 sf facility.  The Play Development and Educational Center for the La Jolla Playhouse at UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance consists of a 425-seat black box theatre, 3 classroom/rehearsal spaces, outdoor public spaces, a restaurant, technical and storage support spaces and a permanent artistic and administrative home for the playhouse.  This facility is a fully flexible teaching and performance facility and is used as an experimental laboratory for artists and educators.

The center will serve as a venue to promote interaction between the university and the community.  The site planning goal is to give the San Diego theatre district a coherent identity, to restore the park and grove and create a court that unifies the 3 theatres in the district. This gorgeous facility was constructed with CMU bearing walls and steel trusses; it was completed in 2006 for a final construction cost of $12,400,000.
