John Sergio Fisher & Associates, Inc. (JSFA), now celebrating its 40th anniversary of providing excellent service, is an architectural, planning/urban design, theatre consulting and acoustical consulting firm.  Our projects range from cultural, educational and community facilities to commercial and medical office buildings to hotels and multi-family housing with a focus on theatres, performing arts centers, musical, fine arts, entertainment and educational facilities. Twenty employees staff our offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

We specialize in the programming and design of new, restored and renovated theatres, as well as fine arts, visual arts, performing arts and entertainment facilities, both public and private.  Our firm has designed over 317 performing arts venues (more than any other architect in the nation!) for drama, musicals, dance, opera, orchestra, band, choral concerts and recitals throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America.

Our constructed projects have served a range of requirements from educational and amateur to repertory and touring professional productions.  Related experience includes theme parks, exhibits, fairs, video studios and specialty cinemas, sound stages, radio and recording studios, editing facilities and multimedia conference rooms, as well as educational institutions with media and rehearsal rooms and classrooms.

We are one of only two architecture firms in the U.S. who has in-house theatre consulting and acoustical consulting divisions which fosters coordinated and functional systems. Our internal theatre and acoustical expertise and services encompass audience chambers, stages and support spaces, seating arrangements and sightlines, acoustics, theatrical lighting control and distribution, rigging and draperies, variable platforms, and stage lifts and machinery.

Other architectural experience includes university, college and K–12 educational facilities, museums and art galleries, hospital and medical office facilities, religious assembly buildings, office buildings, retail centers, community buildings, hotels and affordable multi-family housing including industrialized housing.  We have planned and designed over 13,000 housing units.

Our design philosophy is based upon an innovative problem-solving approach that examines every parameter of the project’s needs.  The result is a design synthesis with a high level of visual and technical quality.  The appearances of our buildings can vary greatly in response to the user, as well as the cultural and environmental context.  What remains constant is the commitment to superbly functioning, sustainable (green) and humanistic architecture.  The design process often includes the participation of project stakeholders in creative, problem-solving charrettes.  We have been recognized for and pride ourselves on our design capabilities within the context of master plan goals and budget and schedule constraints.

We have won numerous awards, including 48 AIA Design Excellence awards as well as Annual AIA/SFV Architecture Firm Awards. Our work has been published regionally, nationally and internationally.
